East Meets West
Through the generosity of the Ukrainian Community Foundation of Philadelphia, Saint Basil Academy received a grant for the funding of Icon writing classes and a class trip to New York to visit the Ukrainian Museum and Ellis Island. The Ukrainian Community Foundation, located in Philadelphia, provides support for specific initiatives of cultural, educational, social service and religious organizations that seek to serve the Ukrainian-American community in Philadelphia.
Sister Susanne Matwijiw, OSBM, Art Instructor at Saint Basil Academy, is the director of the art grant and has begun to teach her students the art of iconography. Starting from the basics, Sister has the student prepare a sketch of the icon they wish to write. Choices of subjects include icons of the Blessed Mother, Christ or the Archangels Gabriel and Michael. Once having chosen their subject, Sister Susanne instructs them step-by-step in the writing of the icon. She also shares the theological and spiritual significance of each icon with her students. “I have wanted to do this project for years, but if it is done correctly it is cost prohibitive. I thank God for the grant from the Ukrainian Foundation that made this experience possible,” said Sr. Susanne. She continued, “The students are deeply touched by the project. There is a prayerful silence while they work and when they get stuck they ask God to guide their hand. The girls are finding inside themselves a talent they did not know they had and the deeper understanding of Eastern spirituality they are gaining is a benefit that cannot be measured as either a current or lifelong value.”
The students in both the Art I and Art II classes, as well as the upper level independent art students, are taking part in the icon experience. Siena Wanders, a freshman, reflected, “I am not Ukrainian but I like learning the culture and how important icons are in the Eastern tradition.” Siena continued, “When I researched icons online to find one that I wanted to do, I thought, I can never do that! But Sister taught us every step one at a time.” She concluded, “I also really liked learning about the meaning of the colors in making icons.”
Ms. Gwen Coté Principal and initiator of the grant application, commented, “ This project has the ability to reach down and touch the very soul of the students. It is impressive to watch the students working on their icons. There is an attitude of prayer in the room and the quality of the results is awe-inspiring. The icons hold spiritual beauty that comes from the heart of the students and their icons will no doubt be a lifelong treasure.”
This is just one of the many ways that the east meets the west at Saint Basil Academy. Saint Basil Academy is a private college preparatory high school for girls located in Montgomery County. The school was founded in 1931 by the Sisters of the Order of Saint Basil the Great. Nurtured by the spiritual and cultural richness of its Ukrainian Catholic heritage, the Academy provides a diversified curriculum that respects the individual needs. Через щедрість Української Громадської Фундації Філадельфії, Академія Святого Василія Великого одержала субсидію на уфундування кляс писання ікон та на прогульку до Ню Йорку відвідати Український Музей та “Еліс Айленд.” Українська Громадська Фундація, яка міститься у Філадельфії, дає підтримку на специфічні ініціятиви культурних, освітніх, суспільних та релігійних організацій, котрі шукають служити українсько-американській громаді у Філадельфії.
Сестра Сузанна Матвіїв, ЧСВВ, учителька мистецтва в Академії Святого Василія Великого, є виконавцем цієї субсидії і вже почала навчати своїх учениць мистецтво іконографії. Починаючи із основами, Сестра навчає як виготувати ескіз ікони, яку учениця хоче писати. Ікони, які ці дівчата малюють можуть представляти Пресвяту Богородицю, Ісуса Христа, або Архангелів Гавриїла або Михаїла. Вибравши тему, Сестра Сузанна навчає крок-за-кроком як писати цю ікону. Також, вона ділиться теологічним і духовним значенням кожної ікони. “Я вже роками хотіла робити цей проєкт, але щоби зробити його правильно, фінансові видатки є дуже великі. Я дякую Богу за цю субсидію від Української Громадської Фундації, що це уможливило,” сказала Сестра Сузанна. Сестра продовжує, “Цей проєкт глибоко торкає наших учениць. Відчута молитовна тишина, як вони працюють, і як застрягають, просять Бога, щоби провадив їхню руку. Дівчата в собі знаходять талант, який не знали, що мають, та глибше зрозуміння східньої духовності є користь, якої не можна зміряти як теперішньою або життєвою вартістю.”
Учениці першого та другого рівня, як і вищого рівня самостійних курсів, беруть участь в цім проєкті. Сієна Вандерс, учениця дев’ятої кляси, поділилася, “Я не є українкою, але люблю вчитися про українську культуру, і про важливість ікон у східньому обряді.” Cієна продовжує, “Як я шукала на мережі за іконою, щоби виконати, я подумала, що я ніколи цього не зможу зробити! Але, Сестра навчила нас кожний крок, один нараз.” Вона кінчає, “Я також дуже зацікавилася вчитися про значення красок в іконографії.”
Пані Ґвен Коте, директорка та ініціатор аплікації на цю субсидію поділилася, “Цей проєкт має можливість увійти в саму душу кожної учениці. Є дуже вражаюче дивитися на працю кожної дівчини. Є молитовний настрій в клясі, та результати є благоговійні. Ікони відзеркалюють духовну красоту, яка виходить із серця учениць, та їхні ікони напевне будуть життєвим скарбом.”
Це є один із багатьох способів, яким Схід сходиться із Заходом в Академії Святого Василія Великого. Академія Святого Василія Великого, положена у Монтґомері Кавнті біля Філадельфії, є приватна дівоча середня школа, яка підготовляє до дальших наук в університеті. Школа заіснована в 1931-ому році Сестрами Чину Святого Василія Великого.
