Pentecost – Sunday, May 24
Wind, Fire, and Proclamation of the Good News to All the Nations
So much of Salvation History happens within so short a span of time! Jesus rises from the dead on Easter Sunday, 40 days later he ascends to the Father (the Ascension), and ten days after that the Holy Spirit comes upon the Apostles and the Blessed Mother (Pentecost).
Luke describes Pentecost in the second chapter of Acts of the Apostles.
“When the time for Pentecost was fulfilled, they were all in one place together. And suddenly there came from the sky a noise like a strong driving wind, and it filled the entire house in which they were. Then there appeared to them tongues as of fire, which parted and came to rest on each one of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in different tongues, as the Spirit enabled them to proclaim.” (Acts 2:1-4)
Pentecost is often described as “the Church’s birthday.” After the coming of the Spirit, the Apostles are empowered and emboldened to proclaim the Gospel to the whole world.
