St. Basil the Great was a bishop in Asia Minor during the 4th century–a critical period in the Church’s history. Together with his elder sister, Macrina, Basil helped define monasticism in the Byzantine East and even influenced St. Benedict. What kind of life did he lead before his ecclesiastical career? Why has he had such an enduring influence on Christendom?
