Understanding the Theotokos (Blessed Mother) through the Hebrew Scriptures
Mary of Nazareth, the mother of Jesus, is known by various titles including Theotokos (“God-bearer”) and Blessed Mother. Less commonly, though of no less importance, she is called the New Eve and the New Ark. In all cases the Catholic understanding of Mary is grounded in the Hebrew Scriptures. Drawing from Brant Pitre’s important book, Jesus and the Jewish Roots of Mary, this program will explore how Church doctrine about the mother of Jesus is inseparable from the Old Testament. KEYWORDS: OLD TESTAMENT, MOTHER OF JESUS, ANCIENT JUDAISM
