Sister Chrysostom Lukiw, OSBM

Sister Chrysostom Lukiw, OSBM, died Sunday, January 5, 2025 at Holy Redeemer Hospital in Jenkintown. PA.  She was 89.

Born in Stamford, Connecticut, on September 13, 1935, Sister was a daughter of the late Panteleymon and Anna (Boylinska) Lukiw.  As Anna Lukiw, she attended Center School, Rice School and Burdick Jr. High School in Stamford and attended St. Basil’s Academy in 1949-1950.  She graduated from Mother of God Academy in Stamford in 1953 and received her BS in Education at Seton Hall University.  She later studied at the University of Detroit, Marygrove College, Fordham University and Manor College.

On June 5, 1954, Anna entered the convent of the Sisters of the Order of St. Basil the Great.  She took her Temporary Profession (first vows) on February 15, 1957 and took her Solemn Profession (final vows) on June 28, 1960 as Sister Chrysostom Lukiw.

Sister undertook teaching ministries at St. John the Baptist in Syracuse, NY from 1957 to 1959;Ss. Peter & Paul School in Jersey City, NJ from 1959 through 1960 and later from 1966 to 1968; Immaculate Conception School in Hamtramck, MI from 1960 to 1966 and from 1972 to 1987; St. John the Baptist in Newark, NJ from 1968 to 1970 and later from 1996 to 2000; Ss. Peter &
Paul School in Cohoes, NY from 1970 to 1972; St. Josaphat in Parma, OH from 1987 to 1991, 2000 to 2001 and 2007 to 2008; St. Nicholas in Chicago from 1991 to 1996; St. George in New York City from 2001 to 2004; and St. Josaphat in Philadelphia from 2004 to 2007.  Sister was in residence at the Sisters Motherhouse in Fox Chase Manor, PA from 2008 until her death. Sister is survived by her sister, Sister Theodosia Lukiw, OSBM; her niece Janet DeLeo, niece Mary Ann Cox and nephew Tom Nosenzo.  She is predeceased by her sister, Sophie Lukiw Nosenzo, and brothers Paul Lukiw and Joseph Lukiw.

Her viewing and Parastas Prayers were held on January 13 at Holy Trinity Chapel at the Sisters’ Motherhouse.  Sister Chrysostom’s funeral with Requiem Liturgy was held on January 14 at Holy Trinity Chapel.  Burial followed at the convent cemetery.
