Sister Genevieve Kotyk, OSBM

Sister Genevieve Kotyk, OSBM, died Friday, January 3, 2025 at the Motherhouse of the Sisters of the Order of Saint Basil the Great in Fox Chase Manor, PA.  She was 87.

Born in Monastyrec, Ukraine, on November 15, 1937, Sister was the daughter of the late Anton and Maria (Pelech) Kotyk.  As Myroslava Kotyk, she journeyed as an orphan to the United States aboard the SS Marine Flasher and arrived to New York Harbor on August 3, 1947. She attended St. Basil’s School in Philadelphia and later moved to Davenport, Iowa where she was welcomed by the Nagle family who remained lifelong friends; she finished her schooling at St.Paul the Apostle School and Immaculate Conception Academy.

On September 8, 1958, Myroslava entered the convent of the Sisters of the Order of St. Basil the Great.  She took her Temporary Profession (first vows) on March 15, 1961, and her Solemn Profession (final vows) on August 23, 1964 as Sister Genevieve Kotyk.

Sister undertook teaching ministries at Ss. Peter & Paul School in Jersey City, NJ from 1961 to 1962; at Ss. Cyril & Methodius School in Berwick, PA from 1962 to 1965; Ss. Peter & Paul School in Cohoes, NY from 1966 to 1967; and Ss. Peter & Paul School in Auburn, NY from 1970 to 1975.  Sister was in residence at St. Basil Orphanage/Home in Philadelphia in 1961 to 1962 and from 1975 to 1990 . She ministered at St. Basil Orphanage in Chesapeake City, MD from 1967 to 1970 and from 1995 to 2004.  She was in residence at various times (1990 to 1995 and 2005 to 2025) at the Sisters’ Motherhouse in Fox Chase Manor, PA.

Her viewing and Parastas Prayers were held January 9 at Holy Trinity Chapel at the Sisters’ Motherhouse.  Sister Genevieve’s funeral with Requiem Liturgy was held January 10 at Holy Trinity Chapel.  Burial followed at the convent cemetery.
