Sisters of St. Basil the Great Stand Strong in their Faith

A brave group of sisters received our 2023-2024 Lumen Christi Award.  They are the Sisters of the Order of St. Basil the Great, and they have been helping the most vulnerable survive since the start of the war in Ukraine.

In Ukraine, their monastery is less than 40 miles from the warfront.  Their city has been under constant missile attack.  Their entire monastery shakes when the missiles land.

Despite these terrors, the sisters house, feed, and aid refugees and soldiers.  They make regular trips to villages less than a mile from combat zones to bring life-saving supplies.

The sisters told us that even though they fear for their own lives, they remain because it is what Jesus has called them to do.

Meanwhile, in the U.S., the sisters have helped settle over 1,000 displaced refugee families.  These families had to leave everything behind.  The Basilian sisters — such as Sister Teodora Kopyn, pictured below — provide food, clothing, and furniture.

Their work proves that in times of great despair and deep need, people turn to the Catholic Church for help.  Then, it is “everyday” people like these sisters who become heroes in the hours, months, and even years after tragedy unfolds.

But these heroes need help, too.

Today, we invite you to participate in supporting the Sisters of the Order of St. Basil the Great, and other work like it.  Your gift today will help to strengthen the Church in the poorest parts of the United States, so even the most humble parish can be a place of hope and refuge for all.
