Catholic religious orders and congregations throughout the Church have seals that tell visual stories about their histories and identities. The Basilian seal is comprised of ancient symbols and used with minor variations by Sisters of Saint Basil the Great worldwide.

Sun Emblazoned with “IXC” and Cross – The sun represents Jesus Christ as the light of the world. “IXC” is the Slavonic abbreviation for “Jesus Christ,” while the cross represents the salvation He won by His crucifixion.

Flaming Pillar – Recalls the pillar of fire in Exodus 13 which guided the Israelites out of Egypt. Represents St. Basil’s firm faith and burning love of God.

Laurel Branch (left) – Symbolizes Christ’s victory over death.

Oak Branch (right) – Symbolizes the virtue of fortitude.

Earth – Represents the Basilian commitment to stewarding the Earth as God’s gift.
